Romania's National Anti-corruption Division (DNA) says in a press release that one of the planned amendments to the Criminal Code actually decriminalizes the offense of false testimony and draws attention to the fact that this has the effect of "including all the pending cases".

One of the great beneficiaries of this amendment tabled by PSD-ALDE, among many other planned changes to the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code, would be Senate speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu, the leader of Liberal Democrats (ALDE), part of the governing coalition. Tariceanu has been charged by the DNA for false testimony in a case in July 2016.

"Modification of art. 273 The Criminal Procedure Code basically decriminalizes the offense of false testimony, including on all the cases pending on this offense, by applying the more favorable criminal law principle. It will be extremely difficult, even impossible, to find the truth, given that the witnesses will know that they can lie without any consequences, having impunity, "reads the DNA release, which analyzes the proposed amendments to the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code.
